Gum Disease

What is gum disease?

Gingivitis is a process where the gums surrounding the teeth get inflamed and bleed upon brushing. The inflammation around the teeth is caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar deposits around the teeth which have not been removed effectively enough. The accumulation of the plaque caused the gums to swell and can bleed when touched. This process in completely reversible in that improved brushing techniques and oral hygiene habits can return the gums back to normal health.

In some cases, persistent inflammation can cause irritation to the supporting bone around the teeth. If this is allowed to continue, the irritation causes the loss of surrounding bone. If enough bone is lost, the teeth can become mobile leading to eventual tooth loss. This process is what is usually meant by ‘gum disease’. Whilst the bone loss is not reversible, it should be possible to stabilise the surrounding bone and hence stabilise the remaining teeth.

What are the signs of gum disease

  • Swollen and bleeding gums
  • Bad taste or smell in the mouth
  • Receeding gums
  • Loosening of teeth
  • teeth moving/drifting from their original position

It is recommended that you visit your dentist regularly so that your dentist can assess the health of your gums and give the appropriate advice. Our gentle hygienists can help improve the gum condition and our dentists can even provide more comprehensive gum treatment in more advanced cases of gum disease. Speak to your dentist at Confidental Clinic Surbiton if you have any concerns regarding gum disease.

Hygienist

At Confidental Clinic Surbiton our caring and dedicated hygienists can help with your gum conditions and brighten your teeth.  Our hygienists work with our dental team to provide you with a customized  gum care plan.    We have a hygienist available Monday to Saturdays to accommodate you at times to suit you.

Hygienist treatments are designed to remove stubborn plaque and tartre deposits from the teeth and below the gums.  This deeper cleaning also removes any staining on the teeth leaving your teeth sparkling and fresh!  At Confidental Clinic Surbiton we also offer jet polishing treatment which can remove the deepest stains lifting the shade of the teeth.  Your hygienist will recommend how often they will need to see you but usually 3,6 or 12 months apart.  In some cases you will be required to see our hygienist for a course of treatment to stabilize the gums.

Once stable, you may be considered for a referral to one of our Specialist Periodontists to help maintain the gum condition using a variety of techniques.

Our hygienist services are available without the prescription of a dentist although we do recommend that you see your dentist regularly to assess your dental health fully.  Contact our team to book an appointment with our hygienist on 020 8399 1291 or  email surbiton@confidentalclinic.com
