Simple advice to help keep your teeth in great shape from your Surbiton dentist.

Here at our modern Surbiton dentist, whilst we do a lot of advanced cosmetic dentistry, at our heart is general dentistry and the fundamental health of the teeth.

With that in mind, we are forever on a quest to give our valued patients as much information as we possibly can about  general oral hygiene. We can do a lot when you visit us, but the way you care for your teeth in between appointments counts for an awful lot too.

To help you with your everyday tooth care, please take a look at these useful do’s and don’ts:

Do

Listen to your Surbiton dentist when they give you specific advice about your individual tooth care.

Don’t

Listen to celebrities advising you on tooth care via advertising – what is right for them might not be right for you, plus – can you really trust their advertising claims when they are being paid to promote a product? If you are ever tempted, check with your dentist first for recommendations.

Do

Brush your teeth really well in the morning and at night with a fluoride toothpaste.

Don’t

Neglect your oral health – issues with your mouth can have an effect on your overall health. Certain oral health conditions have been linked to serious conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Do

Chew sugar free chewing gum as a moist mouth is a happy mouth and the chewing action will help combat plaque and nasty bacteria.

Don’t

Brush your teeth straight after eating acidic or sugary foods. The acid softens the enamel so you could damage it by brushing it straight away. Opt to brush around an hour after eating.

Do

Try to quit unhealthy habits like smoking which are very bad for your oral health, but also for your overall health.

Don’t

Eat sugary foods often and if you do, try to limit it to during mealtimes.

Do

Visit your Surbiton dentist for regular checkups.

Don’t

Avoid visiting us because you are ashamed or embarrassed about missing appointments – we aren’t here to judge, only to help you get your oral health back on track.

Do

Visit us if you notice anything unusual with your oral health. This might be ulcers that won’t heal, pain, bleeding gums, white patches, red patches or lumps and bumps that weren’t there before.

Don’t

Try to ‘cope’ with any oral issues until your check up. Minor issues that can be easily solved in the clinic might turn into much bigger issues if left unchecked. If the issue is anything serious, the sooner we diagnose it and begin treatment the better.

Do

Floss! It might seem that the UK has some catching up to do here, but it really does help your oral care a lot. Flossing gets all the bits of debris hiding between your teeth that you might not get to during brushing.

Don’t

Spend less than two minutes brushing your teeth a day.
