Preventing the UK’s largest cause of tooth loss.

At your local Surbiton dentist we are pleased to provide a wide range of cosmetic and general treatments for our patients. One particularly important topic is prevention, and particularly preventing or treating gum disease.

Sadly, gum disease is still the leading cause of tooth loss in the UK, so we are always pressing to raise awareness of it and ensuring we are on the forefront of dental technologies so we can provide the most modern treatments currently available.

So, What Is Gum Disease?

Disease may be present where the gums bleed when you brush them or show signs of inflammation. This inflammation typically occurs because of the plaque and tartar around the teeth which has not been removed properly; in fact excessive plaque can cause the gums to swell up and bleed after brushing. In some instances, gum disease may advance to a more developed stage which can lead to the loss of tissue, teeth and the bones that support the teeth.

The Signs Of Gum Disease

You may have gum disease if you see the following symptoms:

  • Teeth are loosened
  • Teeth move from their original position
  • The mouth doesn’t taste nice, or doesn’t smell nice (persistently)
  • Gums are inflamed
  • Gums bleed

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease can occur because of lots of different reasons including smoking, drinking and brushing too hard. However, the most common cause of gum disease is plaque. Your mouth is jam packed full of bacteria that mixes with saliva and creates plaque, a sticky film which sticks to your teeth and builds up. When you eat and drink high sugar or starchy foods, the bacteria turn that debris into acids which breaks your teeth down causing tooth decay. Plaque can be removed by you brushing your teeth everyday, twice a day, with the right toothpaste and toothbrush. If you don’t remove it properly it hardens and becomes tartar which has to be removed by your dentist or hygienist.

Regular Hygienist Visits

Hygienists are trained in preventing gum disease and our gentle and dedicated team at Confidental Surbiton will be able to provide you with a personalised gum care plan. Our hygienists can also treat you, giving you a deep clean to get rid of any build up plaque and tartar. There is also a jet polishing treatment which cleans off deep stains, making the teeth whiter and brighter.

Where necessary, the hygienist can also give you a gum stabilising plan, which may involve seeing one of our expert periodontists depending on your personal situation and if your level of gum disease has advanced or looks likely to advance.
